Sun? Key Features of Sun and 25 MCQ GK Questions with Answers on Sun.

Definition and Description of the Sun

**The Sun** is the star at the center of the Solar System. It is a nearly perfect sphere of hot plasma, primarily composed of hydrogen (about 75%) and helium (about 24%). The Sun generates its energy through a process called nuclear fusion, where hydrogen atoms combine to form helium, releasing vast amounts of energy in the form of light and heat.

 Key Features of the Sun:
1. **Composition**: Primarily hydrogen and helium, with traces of heavier elements like oxygen, carbon, neon, and iron.
2. **Size**: The Sun has a diameter of about 1.39 million kilometers (870,000 miles), making it 109 times wider than Earth.
3. **Mass**: It contains more than 99.8% of the total mass of the Solar System. Its mass is approximately 1.989 × 10^30 kilograms.
4. **Temperature**:
   - **Core**: Around 15 million degrees Celsius (27 million degrees Fahrenheit), where nuclear fusion occurs.
   - **Surface (Photosphere)**: About 5,500°C (9,932°F).
   - **Corona**: The outer atmosphere of the Sun, reaching temperatures of over 1 million°C (1.8 million°F).
5. **Energy Production**: Nuclear fusion occurs in the Sun's core, converting hydrogen into helium. This process releases energy that radiates outward, providing the light and heat essential for life on Earth.
6. **Rotation**: The Sun rotates on its axis once every 25 days at its equator but takes about 35 days at its poles. This differential rotation occurs because the Sun is not a solid body.
7. **Solar Wind**: The Sun emits a continuous flow of charged particles, known as the solar wind. This wind extends throughout the Solar System, influencing space weather and Earth's magnetic field.
8. **Life Cycle**: The Sun is currently about halfway through its main sequence phase, during which it fuses hydrogen into helium. It will remain in this phase for another 5 billion years before transitioning into a red giant and eventually becoming a white dwarf.
9. **Distance from Earth**: The Sun is approximately 149.6 million kilometers (93 million miles) away from Earth. This distance is referred to as one Astronomical Unit (AU).
10. **Light and Energy**: The Sun provides the energy necessary for life on Earth. It emits light across the electromagnetic spectrum, including visible light, ultraviolet (UV) light, and infrared radiation.

Structure of the Sun:
1. **Core**: The central region where nuclear fusion occurs.
2. **Radiative Zone**: Energy moves outward through radiation.
3. **Convective Zone**: Energy is transferred by convection currents of hot plasma.
4. **Photosphere**: The visible surface of the Sun.
5. **Chromosphere**: A thin layer above the photosphere that emits ultraviolet radiation.
6. **Corona**: The outer atmosphere of the Sun, visible during a solar eclipse.
