Major Rivers of Jammu & Kashmir – Complete Study Notes

These notes cover all important rivers of Jammu & Kashmir including their origin, length, tributaries, dams, irrigation importance, and geographical significance. Important for UPSC, JKPSC, SSC and State level exams.


1. Indus River (Sindhu)

  • Source: Mansarovar Lake, Tibet
  • Length: 3180 km (Total)
  • Flows through: Ladakh region
  • Tributaries in J&K: Zanskar, Shyok

The Indus River enters India through Ladakh. It is one of the longest rivers in Asia. The river is historically significant as the Indus Valley Civilization developed along it. It flows westwards into Pakistan.


2. Jhelum River

  • Source: Verinag Spring, Anantnag
  • Length: 725 km (Total)
  • Major Tributaries: Lidder, Sindh, Vishav
  • Important Dam: Uri Hydroelectric Project

The Jhelum is the lifeline of Kashmir Valley. It flows through Srinagar and Wular Lake. It is crucial for irrigation, drinking water and hydroelectric power.


3. Chenab River

  • Source: Bara Lacha Pass (Himachal Pradesh)
  • Length: 960 km
  • Flows through: Doda, Kishtwar, Ramban
  • Major Projects: Salal Dam, Baglihar Dam

The Chenab River is one of the largest tributaries of the Indus. It flows through deep gorges in Jammu region and has major hydroelectric potential.


4. Tawi River

  • Source: Kailash Kund Glacier
  • Length: 141 km
  • Flows through: Jammu city

The Tawi River is known as the lifeline of Jammu city. It joins the Chenab River in Pakistan. It has religious significance and supports irrigation.


5. Ravi River

  • Source: Himalayas (Himachal Pradesh)
  • Flows through: Border areas of J&K

The Ravi forms part of the boundary between India and Pakistan. It is one of the five rivers of Punjab.


6. Zanskar River

  • Source: Zanskar Valley
  • Tributary of: Indus River

The Zanskar River is famous for the Chadar Trek. It flows through high-altitude cold desert region of Ladakh.


7. Shyok River

  • Source: Rimo Glacier
  • Tributary of: Indus River

The Shyok River flows through Nubra Valley. It is strategically important due to its location near international borders.


8. Lidder River

  • Source: Kolahoi Glacier
  • Tributary of: Jhelum River

The Lidder River flows through Pahalgam and is important for tourism and trout fishing.


9. Sindh River

  • Source: Machoi Glacier
  • Tributary of: Jhelum River

The Sindh River flows through Sonamarg and supports agriculture and hydropower.


10. Kishanganga (Neelum)

  • Source: Near Sonamarg
  • Tributary of: Jhelum River
  • Important Project: Kishanganga Hydroelectric Project

The Kishanganga River is strategically important and flows into Pakistan-administered territory. It is vital for hydropower generation.
