  1. Ganges (Ganga):

    • One of the most sacred rivers in Hinduism, originating from the Gangotri Glacier in the Indian state of Uttarakhand.
    • Flows through the northern plains of India, passing through states like Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and West Bengal before draining into the Bay of Bengal.
    • Important for religious rituals, agriculture, and as a water source for millions of people.
  2. Yamuna:

    • Another major tributary of the Ganges, originating from the Yamunotri Glacier in Uttarakhand.
    • Flows through states like Delhi, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh before merging with the Ganges at Prayagraj (Allahabad).
    • Provides water for irrigation and is considered holy by Hindus.
  3. Brahmaputra:

    • One of the major rivers in Northeast India, originating in Tibet as the Yarlung Tsangpo River.
    • Flows through Tibet, India (Arunachal Pradesh and Assam), and Bangladesh before merging with the Ganges and Meghna rivers to form the world's largest delta in the Bay of Bengal.
    • Important for irrigation, transportation, and supporting diverse ecosystems.
  4. Indus:

    • One of the longest rivers in Asia, originating in Tibet and flowing through parts of India and Pakistan.
    • Major tributaries include the Jhelum, Chenab, Ravi, Beas, and Sutlej rivers.
    • Historically significant for the Indus Valley Civilization and important for irrigation and hydroelectric power generation.
  5. Godavari:

    • The second longest river in India, originating from the Western Ghats in Maharashtra.
    • Flows through Maharashtra, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and Odisha before draining into the Bay of Bengal.
    • Known as the "Dakshin Ganga" or the Ganges of the South and is important for agriculture, industry, and drinking water supply.

    • Originates from the Western Ghats near Mahabaleshwar in Maharashtra.
    • Flows through Maharashtra, Karnataka, Telangana, and Andhra Pradesh before emptying into the Bay of Bengal.
    • Significant for irrigation, hydroelectricity, and supplying water to major cities.
  7. Narmada:

    • Originates from Amarkantak Hill in Madhya Pradesh.
    • Flows through Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Gujarat before draining into the Arabian Sea.
    • Known for its marble rocks in Bhedaghat, and the Narmada Valley is considered ecologically and geologically important.
  8. Tapti (Tapi):

    • Originates from Multai in Madhya Pradesh.
    • Flows through Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Gujarat before draining into the Arabian Sea.
    • Important for agriculture and supporting local ecosystems.
