ELECTION COMMISSION OF INDIA
IMPORTANT POINTS :-
1. It is multi-member body and currently has three members including Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) and two election commissioners (ECs). They all are appointed by the President.
2. Shri Sunil Arora takes over as new Chief Election Commissioner of India. Shri Sunil Arora today assumed charge as the 23rd Chief Election Commissioner(CEC) of India succeeding Shri O.P.Rawat. Shri Rawat who demitted the office on 1st December, 2018 after completing his tenure.
3. The President appoints the Chief Election Commissioner and Election Commissioners after the law ministry initiates the file for their appointment. A Chief Election Commissioner can be removed from the office only through impeachment by Parliament. The President can remove the ECs based on the recommendation of the CEC.
4. Ramadevi (15 January 1934 – 17 April 2013) M.A, L.L.M, was the Chief Election Commissioner of India from 26 November 1990 to 11 December 1990. She was the first woman to become Chief Election Commissioner of India. She was succeeded by T. N. Seshan.
5. Statutory body is a non-constitutional body. This body is created by statute (i.e. act of parliament.) ... Constitutional bodies are those that derive their existence and thus authority from the Constitution itself. Eg: Finance Commission [Art 280],Election Commission [Art 324], etc.
6. The Election Commission has got the power to conduct electrol rolls for all the elections of Parliament, State Legislature, Offices of President and Vice President. The Election Commission has the power of Superintendence, Direction and control over the preparation of the electrol rolls.
7. Sukumar Sen (civil servant) Sukumar Sen (1898–1961) was an Indian civil servant who was the first Chief Election Commissioner of India, serving from 21 March 1950 to 19 December 1958.
8. Negi has voted in every general election since 1951, and is believed to be India's oldest voter as well its first. Shyam Saran Negi also made a special appearance in a Hindi film Sanam Re.
9. A CEC of the Election Commission can have a tenure of six years or hold office till the age of 65 years, whichever is earlier. The convention is to appoint the senior-most election commissioner as chief election commissioner. A former bureaucrat, Arora was appointed as election commissioner on August 31, 2017.
10. Lydia Taft of Uxbridge became the first woman to ever vote in the nation. Judge Henry Chapin records in his 1864 address to the Unitarian church, that, "Uxbridge may yet become famous as the pioneer in the cause of Women's suffrage". This was written 56 years before women's suffrage became legal in all of America.
11. It was first introduced in 1993 during the tenure of the Chief Election Commissioner TN Seshan.
12. In 1947, on its independence from the United Kingdom, India granted equal voting rights to all men and women. From 1918, with the rest of the United Kingdom,women could vote at 30 with property qualifications or in university constituencies, while men could vote at 21 with no qualification.
